5 Things to improve Dental Hygiene

Follow this five things, you can avoid most of the Dental problems.

1 Brush your teeth twice a day

Dentist recommends brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.

When you brush your teeth, it removes  food and plaque( a sticky white film that forms on your teeth and it contains bacteria). Keep minimum half an hour gap between your meal and brushing. If you have eaten an acidic food or drink,  avoid brushing your teeth immediately.

Few tips to remember regarding brushing your teeth.

     - Always use soft toothbrush. Avoid medium and hard toothbrush.

-Take a pea size toothpaste, wet the brush then start brushing.

    -Always do flossing before brushing.

    - Replace your toothbrush every after three to four months.

-If you have Arthritis or have difficulty in holding toothbrush consider buying an electric or battery    operated toothbrush.

2) Use Water Flosser

Water Flosser is a gentle alternative to traditional flossing.

Traditional flossing is a technique sensitive and time-consuming. Water flosser  is a quicker way to do flossing and is less likely to cause gums to become inflamed or bleed.

Water flosser allow you to easily remove the plaque, food particles and bacteria that get stuck in hard-to-reach places.

Flossing is not substitute for brushing. Use of water flosser once at night is recommended.

3) Alter Dietary habits

The main reason of tooth decay is sticky film of bacteria called plaque.

Each and every time bacteria come in contact with sugar or starch in mouth. Acid is produced which attacks the teeth. This eventually result in tooth decay. So avoid sugary food and soft drinks.

Most soft drinks contain phosphoric acid and citric acid. Prolonged exposure to acids can do permanent damage to teeth by producing a condition called erosion (loss of hard tissue from tooth surface)

Eat fibrous food which form less plaque, in every meal & Drink lots of water.

4) Fluoride application

Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in many foods and water.

Fluoride helps to prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugar in the mouth.

It also reverses early Decay.  Even toothpaste and mouthrinses contain fluoride in lesser amount.

A Dentist in their office can also apply fluoride to the teeth as a Gel, Foam or Varnish. This contain a higher level of fluoride than the amount found in toothpaste and mouth rinses. Varnishes  are painted on teeth, Foams are put into a mouth guard and apply to teeth, Gels can be painted on teeth. This will take only few minutes.

Above three years of age, all can go for office fluoride application depending upon their oral conditions.

5) Regular Dental Check-up

Regular Dental visits are important because they help to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

The Dentist will examine the patient's teeth to look for early signs of tooth decay.

The Dentist will perform a professional teeth cleaning to remove plaque or tartar from the teeth and gums. This will protect the teeth and gums from attacks by harmful bacteria that make their home in plaque and tartar.
